Jamil remembers working with his father in their city-wide movie rental business to capturing weddings by his side. His mom having a passion for fashion, opened an Indian retail store and over a summer, he and his father renovated this location into what Mehfil magazine called “The Taj Mahal of Main Street”. Having also worked with his relatives established businesses in hospitality, food, and media, Jamil attributes his growth to these experiences. As a middle child, Jamil is proud to have two sisters, with one specializing in mental health and the other designing Toronto’s movie sets. Today, his family has been serving up Mom’s traditional recipes at their restaurant, Jambo Grill, in Vancouver since 2005. A nostalgic moment Jamil recalls is preparing puri and chai on Breakfast Television with Riaz Meghji, watch here.
Jamil’s community-driven ethos blossomed during the Golden Jubilee when he was selected to film the Aga Khans’ visit to Vancouver. Soon after he was given an opportunity to document his peers throughout East Africa on the Heritage Development Tour in 2007, which remains a momentous experience for him. One of his most significant achievements was the creation of a Jubilee Arts film called The Journey – Rumi Recomposed at the Ismaili Centre Vancouver. Growing up across the street, Jamil has always found great solitude in this space and his portfolio of work related to the Centre is something he cherishes. From filming Hazar Imam in the courtyard to capturing 100s of weddings and events. Jamil also interviewed The Centre’s Architect, Bruno Freshci for the 35th anniversary video. This Jubilee Arts Film unveiled the Ismaili Centre in a new light with never-before-seen aerial footage. The film toured across Canada and was presented at the Jubilee Arts Film Festival in Lisbon. Jamil’s film touched on all four creative prompts: Devotion, Aspiration, Legacy, and Time. Receiving critical acclaim from the global Jamat, Jamil was able to express himself through his performance, poetry, and cinematography. With over 250 hours devoted to a 5 minute film, he states, “Producing The Journey itself was a pilgrimage” and talks more about that in his Directors Cut Video. Meticulously crafted, TheJourneyfilm.ca is dedicated to the center and reveals the hidden meanings behind the film.
During the Jubilee Arts, Jamil collaborated with artists globally and produced several videos which you can see in his private gallery. Some of the most notable works were with Tazneem Tarmohamad in her Mawla music video, Tasmiya Productions Wajhu The Glimpse and Anuraage-e-Vaage – 3 countries 1 song. All captured at the Ismaili Centre Vancouver. His most proud piece is a photographic collection of historic Downtown Vancouver Jamat Khana, highlighting intricate details. Jamil’s photos were showcased in the logia allowing the Jamat to appreciate this architecture. Now deconstructed, Jamil’s images help cherish our past.
